Eric J. Smith
Distinguished Engineer · Two-time bootstrapped founder
Engineering leader and two-time bootstrapped founder, writing software professionally since 1991. Built CodeSmith Tools and Exceptionless, whose products have generated $16M+ in revenue with no outside funding, and brings that business sense (pricing, sales, support, hosting costs, payroll) to every technical decision. Uses AI to aim higher and deliver many times faster, with automated test, review and verification loops that keep quality and consistency high.
Experience
Distinguished Engineer · Concord Finance
2023 – Present
Credit administration servicing and software for specialty finance; $60B+ in assets under administration.
- Led the greenfield build of Concord Link, the loan, lease and line-of-credit servicing platform replacing a green-screen system that ran the business for 40+ years. With almost no documented requirements, learned how servicing really worked from the people doing it and designed a configurable platform rather than a single-vertical product, so the business can grow into new markets without starting over. Now live with clients.
- Designed and built the scripting engine and durable workflows (on Jint) that turn each client's business rules for payment allocation, fees, interest, statements and collections into configuration instead of engineering releases. Workflows wait days for an account event and resume with deterministic replay; released the core as open-source Jint.Workflows.
- Designed and built the configurable import/export pipeline that turned client onboarding and legacy migration into setup work: declarative mappings with scripted transforms; CSV, Excel, XML and JSON; PGP, SFTP and S3; scheduling and record-level error handling.
- Architected the multi-tenant .NET and SvelteKit platform on AWS, and set the engineering bar for a team of 20+ through architecture, mentoring and 1,500+ code reviews.
- Led the team's AI adoption: an AI code-review pipeline (five specialist reviewers, evals and cost telemetry; 1,000+ PRs reviewed), a permission-scoped MCP server so staff can use AI with live data, and shared agent guidelines, skills and UI verification.
Founder · Exceptionless
2013 – Present
Bootstrapped, open-source error, log and feature-usage monitoring, sold as a hosted SaaS and available self-hosted. Owner-operated alongside full-time roles.
- Founded and run the business and lead the product: pricing and packaging, hosting and infrastructure costs, customer support and the open-source community.
- 34M+ NuGet downloads, 3.5M+ Docker pulls and 3,500+ GitHub stars across its projects. Built on .NET, Elasticsearch, Redis and Kubernetes.
- In 2026, used AI agents to finish a complete Svelte rewrite of the app and remove the legacy Angular UI (−42K lines). Also upgraded to .NET 10 and Aspire, launched a hosted MCP server with OAuth, and shipped an in-app AI assistant for investigating errors. That came to 580+ commits and 170 merged PRs in 2026.
Founder & President · CodeSmith Tools
2003 – Present
Bootstrapped developer-tools company behind CodeSmith Generator. Owner-operated alongside full-time roles since 2015.
- Built CodeSmith Generator, which began as a free tool and became one of the first widely used code generators for .NET. Designed the template language and built the parser, compiler and an IDE with autocomplete, plus the SchemaExplorer database metadata library and Visual Studio and MSBuild integrations.
- Ran the business, hiring and managing a team of up to 10 people; together with Exceptionless, grew the products to $16M+ in lifetime revenue. Owned licensing, sales, online marketing, support and operations.
Chief Software Architect · SlideRoom Technologies / Liaison International
2015 – 2023
- Technical lead on a greenfield college admissions platform, now used by hundreds of colleges and universities (C#, TypeScript, AWS, Azure, Elasticsearch, Redis, RabbitMQ, Kubernetes).
- Provided technical leadership and mentoring across three new commercial products; started knowledge-sharing and shared-components programs, and simplified and automated CI/CD with a deployment chat bot.
- Built a data integration platform that merges contacts and activity from Stripe, MailChimp, HubSpot, Zendesk, Google Workspace, IMAP and dynamically mapped JSON, CSV and XML webhooks into one unified record.
Senior Database Engineer · Match.com
2003 – 2004
Designed, developed and optimized the database architecture for the largest online dating site in the world.
Architect / Lead Software Engineer · RedRiver Systems
2001 – 2003
Designed a new application architecture on early .NET, led the development staff on new .NET technologies, and was technical lead for the United eWay online pledge processing system. Created the first version of CodeSmith here.
Architect, Microsoft Competency Group · Rare Medium
2000 – 2001
Provided technical leadership for the Microsoft competency group's development staff.
Software Developer · CurrSoft; Frontier Communications
1991 – 2000
